NATIONAL HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS WEEK

UNLV is proud to observe National Hispanic Serving Institutions Week (HSI hereafter) September 14th-20, 2020 to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month. The purpose of HSI’s Week is to recognize 539 HSI’s throughout the nation for their work and critical role in educating and empowering Latinx students.

UNLV is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution. The HSI designation indicates that an institution enrolls at least 25 percent Latinx full-time equivalent enrollment.

According to the UNLV Office of Diversity Initiatives website, about 63 percent of UNLV students identify as a racial or ethnic minority. Of that, Hispanic students make up the largest minority undergraduate student group at UNLV at 28.8 percent.

The Postsecondary National Policy Institute (PNPI), (2019) found that during the 2017–2018 academic school year, HSI’s were responsible for graduating just over 45% of all Latino graduates in the United States. Thereby, underscoring the important role HSI’s play in higher education.

To honor this week Aramark and Housing Residential Life will host A Taste of Latinx Heritage Cultural Dinner in the Dining Commons on September 17, 2020 from 5:00pm-7:00pm.  It is encouraged that the entire UNLV campus use social media to heighten awareness of the important role HSIs play in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.
