The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Keren Jean-Charles is a first-generation university student striving to advance UNLV’s “serving” mission as a minority-serving institution. 2021 FIRST-GENERATION ESSAY CONTEST

The MSI Student Council and The Intersection are excited to announce the Second Annual First-Generation Student Essay Contest. The contest is part of the UNLV 2021 First-Generation Campus-wide Celebration. The deadline to submit is Friday, November 12, 2021.

Details: Any first-generation UNLV student can enter this contest by picking one of these terms and writing a short personal essay inspired by it. Essays should be 500 words long. The essay should address the writer’s life experience in some way.

HOCUS POCUS MOVIE NIGHT

It’s spooky season and MSISC is showing the newly recognized cult-classic, HOCUS POCUS, for a throwback movie night at UNLV on the SWRC Lawn. 

Millennials, zillennials, and anyone else who grew up watching Hocus Pocus might find it surprising that the film was actually a flop in regards to its original earnings in 1993. MINORITY-SERVING INSTITUTION STUDENT COUNCIL PARTNERS WITH THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER

Students don’t always know when to get help and sometimes when they do, they don’t know where to go. The Minority-Serving Institution Student Council (MSISC) has partnered with the Academic Success Center (ASC) to promote student success by ensuring that students simply know where to go to get help. 

The ASC is a well-known resource but can sometimes be overlooked on campus. Through multiple collaborations, the MSISC hopes to better educate historically underrepresented students at UNLV on the benefits of reaching out to the ASC when they need help. MSISC HOLDS SEMESTER RETREAT

The Minority Serving- Institution Student Council (MSISC) kicked off the semester by holding their 2021 in-person fall retreat on Saturday, August 21st.  The learning outcomes for the retreat were:

Strengthen commitments and connections to council and fellow council members through participating in get-to-know-you and team-building activities

Explain foundational knowledge (i.e., history, purpose) about Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), particularly about the dual MSI designations

Demonstrate confidence in their roles as MSISC members through engaging in reflections around what successful advocacy or organizing looks like
