First-Generation Week at UNLV this year is marked by several firsts—first time held remotely; first time to take place during a pandemic; and first time the newly-formed Minority-Serving Institution Student Council (MSISC) is participating. FIRST-GENERATION STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST

The Black Mountain Institute, The Intersection, and the MSI Student Council are excited to announce the First-Generation Student Essay Contest. The contest is part of the UNLV 2020 First-Gen Celebration. The deadline to submit is Friday, November 13, 2020.

Details: Any first-generation UNLV student can enter this contest by picking one of these terms and writing a short personal essay inspired by it. Essays should be 500 words long. The essay should address the writer’s life experience in some way.

INTRODUCING THE MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTION (MSI) STUDENT COUNCIL

The UNLV MSI Task Force Student Services Subcommittee is excited to introduce the MSI Student Council to the UNLV community.  Over the past few months, the subcommittee has been working to get this ground-breaking initiative created and implemented to serve the community starting fall 2020.  The MSI Student Council is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and it will take important steps at ensuring that student-facing programs, service models, and policies exist to help historically underrepresented students thrive at UNLV.

Issues of mass incarceration and criminalization in American society are well documented. For individuals looking to change their lives and put the stigma of their pasts behind them, higher education provides an opportunity for upward social and economic mobility. Despite the opportunity a college education provides, students with criminal backgrounds (justice-involved/impacted individuals) often encounter cultural and structural barriers which negatively affect issues of access and success.
